ABOUT OUR BISHOP


Bishop (Lieutenant Colonel) Irvine A. Bryer retired on February 8, 2009 as the Command Chaplain of the 3rd Medical Command (Deployment Support), United States Army Reserve, Fort Gillem, Georgia after serving for 31 years in the United States Army.  He served as a first responder on the morning of the attack on the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001 and was tasked in the ensuing weeks to be the New York State Task Force Chaplain for Operation Enduring Freedom. 

Bishop Bryer's Christian service includes serving as Senior Pastor for the Church of Resurrection East Harlem, the Hollis Avenue Congregational Church - Hollis Queens, and the Corona United Church of Christ - Corona Queens (from 1980 until 1992).

His civilian education includes a Bachelor of Arts degree, Hunter College, The City University of New York, New York, and a Masters of Divinity degree, Union Theological Seminary, New York, New York. He is both a Rockefeller Fellow and a Benjamin Mays Fellow. Bishop Bryer is also a graduate of the United States Army Command and General Staff College. His education includes Chaplain Officer Basic and Advanced coursework as well.

Bishop Bryer is married to the former Michelle Ashe. They have two daughters: Stacy and Tyesha, and one grandchild.
